RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.
The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several access tunnels providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.
There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.
The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.
"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.
RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.
"I must thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their courage," he said. "They were part of thousands of British troops on duty over the holidays. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, highlights how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."
During December, the American forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, following an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.
The U.N. reports Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
