Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from captain Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple conversations following England's defeat in the second Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

However, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

A loss will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener said any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There is no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
